Five Things to Do After a Job Loss

Get organized

When you lose your job, the first thing you need to do is get organized. You need to take a step back and figure out what your next steps are going to be. If it's offered, leverage the transitional support.

Reflect

If your termination came with pay for a period of time, that translates to breathing room. If you can, consider using it to determine what kind of job you actually want next. Before you start making a list of everything you need to do to prepare for your job search, make a list of what went well in the previous one. What can you learn about yourself and what moves you? Is a more purpose-driven organization what's next for you?

Network

Now is the time to start (or ramp up) networking. Attend events, even virtual ones or meetups, if appropriate for your industry. You never know who you'll meet or what opportunities will come your way. The same goes for your presence on LinkedIn. Get active and start connecting with people in your field.

Consider freelance work or starting your own business

As I mentioned above, if you feel comfortable doing so, use this as an opportunity to reflect. What motivated you in your last role? What do you need in whatever is next for you? If you said you wanted more freedom or flexibility, you might be able to find freelance work, or perhaps this is the time to start your own business. (In this economic climate? Yes. A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor, after all). This can also be a good way to test the waters and see if it's something you want to pursue in the long run.

Stay positive

This is easier said than done, but try to keep a positive outlook. This is a difficult time, but it's not the end of the world. Job loss can be stressful, so make sure to take care of yourself both physically and mentally. Spend time with loved ones and do things that make you happy.

Remember that you are not defined by your job. You are so much more than that.
