Team Human

For this week’s #projectQuilting, the prompt was “Team Colors.”

I thought of myriad teams, and easily. And as I did, I realized each one put us into groups of us & them. Democrat vs Republican. Blackhawks vs whoever they’re playing. Edward vs Jacob. Hufflepuff versus the other ones. Straight versus queer. Parents versus non-parents. People who understand there are non-binary folks in the world versus those who don’t. Blue collar vs white collar. White versus PoC.

And I realized that if we sit there and choose teams, pick sides, we just aren’t going to survive.

Think of all the awful things happening; let me give you some ideas: Australia is on fire. Massive, unprecedented hurricanes. Earthquakes. Volcanos. Coronavirus. The Black Plague being back. Or manmade disasters like the family separation order issued by the current US administration. Or Venice sinking & flooding in part due to climate change & in part due to corruption. Anti vaxxers whose children a reintroducing deadly, debilitating viruses into school systems.

We have GOT to remember we are all on the SAME team. Team HUMAN. That’s all that matters. We can’t let media or those in power separate us, because united we stand but divided we fall. Regardless of the color of our skin, if we are going to survive and thrive, we must remember we only have one world, and we are members of one team, regardless of the amount of melanin we were genetically predisposed to have.

In the above image, the heart in the lower RH is actually on the back of the quilt. That’s the patchwork piece of this.

I used newsprint as the front fabric and TV test pattern fabric for the back to represent the influence these types of media have on our perception of each other and the world around us.

I quilted the word HUMAN over the entire quilt to remind us that in spite of (and really BECAUSE of) the horrors going on in every day, it’s important that we unite as one team, with this one world we have.
